Kago by kazenokibou Kago by kazenokibou
Techinically, kago means basket (in Japanese) but since my dad called it that way, and it has a cool kanji, I thought that would be good...

Done in bass wood, using mostly scroll saw. it consists of four panels with design on it. I put stain and finish in the end.

The assighment was to make a box with few panels. When they were demonstrating, I thought scroll saw technique was simullar to my cutout so I decided to heavily use that. Although I kind of regretted in the end (scroll saws can be evil), I still like the finished product. Done in first semester. A totally useless box that I gave to my parents for Christmas gift.

*I meant to scan things in to have a break between this and Apple Famine Logo but I just didn't have time to go to the computer lab.. And I also apologize for the same layout as the Apple Famine one. I don't know anything like communication design so I had no more ideas to make it look okay without looking boring...

a masterpiece. really, you had to put on it a lot of effort, so many details. and it seems to be done in art nouveau style.
... and maybe useless, but if I were a parent, I wish my children gave me such beautiful handmade thing :)

I had that style in my mind when I was designing it. I like the flowy style... thank you for the kind comment! :)

That is really beautiful, your folks are very lucky to have it for a gift. How big is it? It'd make a great coffee table if it's big enough.

There's something kind of art nouveau about this. I love it, and it's certainly art for arts sake, which has some intrinsic difficulties of course. But hey, it's awesome.

Beautiful work. Love it. have you considered putting a different colored LED light between each layer? Might create a nice shadow effect.
kazenokibou Featured By Owner Jan 23, 2006
Wow.... I totally didn't... connect these two together... that's soooo odd! o_O

Will.. sorry not replying... when you say colored LED light, do you mean different colored bulbs? I don't know mych about taking picture's and stuff. --;;

Yeah, more or less. LED's are little low voltage, long life, lights. The idea was lighting it from the inside might do interesting things with the cut paterns. If you need help with pictures, let me know. I have some studio lights and other stuff.

I love those beautiful curls. I'm horrid at woodworking myself--I can't even sand properly--but I'd definitely purchase one of these if I came across it.

Open one side, widen the gaps between the panels, you've got a cool newspaper rack !
Thinking of mass-producing them ?
